St. Mary’s Development and Care Centre Founder
St. Mary’s Development and Care Centre (DCC), founded in February 1982 to provide food and clothing for children from disadvantaged communities, first operated in Curry Street before moving in November 1982 to its current location at Albany and Fitchat Streets.
Today, the Centre cares for 160 children through before- and after-school programmes. While still meeting children’s basic needs, it has grown to take a holistic approach, addressing the broader needs of both the children and their families.
Prepares children aged 5–7 for school by building literacy, fine and gross motor skills, and visual perception, ensuring a strong academic and physical foundation.
Supports Foundation Phase learners with reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar, while fostering a love for books through library and storytelling sessions.
Encourages children to learn from and teach one another, building trust, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Uses themed creative activities to boost imagination, confidence, and life skills, linking learning to real-life experiences.
Safeguards vulnerable children through workshops, training, and partnerships that prioritise their safety and well-being.
Teaches children personal safety skills, helping them identify unsafe situations and seek help confidently through interactive learning.
Offers boys and girls life skills, leadership, and community engagement opportunities through outdoor activities, advocacy, and teamwork.
Builds resilience, confidence, and values in children, equipping them to face life’s challenges positively.
Unites partners to protect children’s rights, promote inclusion, and empower young voices in Makhanda.
Provides counselling, guidance, and referrals to help families and children manage emotional, mental, and social challenges.
